Centre for Electrical Power Engineering Studies (CEPES)

The primary focus of the Centre of Electrical Power Engineering Studies (CEPES) is to undertake research and teaching activities of the highest international standards in electrical power engineering and related areas. Most of the current research activities conducted in CEPES is funded by the government, university and industry. The research community in CEPES is focusing towards internationally-leading research work that is beneficial to the society and publishes the findings in most of the prestigious international journals. CEPES pro actively collaborate with other departments and industry in particular research projects. The centre also emphasises on research knowledge sharing adapted in the undergraduate teaching.

Career Opportunities

The pace of progress in electrical and power engineering in the last few decades was amazing. In almost every sphere, our lives have been affected by the development of electrical and power engineering. Consequently, electrical and power engineers are highly sought after and can be found in practically every branch of industry and commerce. Our graduates have worked for a wide range of local, national and international organisations and working in areas such as:

  • Research, development and evaluation of power technology and system
  • Development of software for power system
  • Generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy
  • Consultancy and services.

Therefore, the choice towards enrollment in this programme will equip the candidates for future challenges related to the Electrical Power industries in line with the country development.

Facilities

The faculty is equipped with sufficient resources, facilities and laboratories with experience laboratory assistants catering for the current needs in the curriculum of Electrical Engineering. In the faculty, Power System Lab, Machine and Drives Lab, Power Electronic Lab, High Voltage Lab, Advance Electric Machines Lab, Photovoltaic lab and are well established. In addition a good collection of up to date engineering reference books are on the shelves of the library.

Research Activities

Majority of the lectures in this faculty are actively participating in various fields of research. There are several fields of research activities in Electrical Power Engineering, namely:

Power Electronics And Drives
The research themes of this area mainly focusing on the Off-grid and On-grid PV systems; inverter performance for the On-grid PV system; advanced power electronic converter and inverter; bi-axial solar tracking for PV system; small-signal model for the three-phase ac-dc converter; three-phase synchronous PWM flyback converter with power factor correction; high frequency transformer core for dc-dc flyback converter; single-phase half-bridge active power filter (APF) with uninterruptible power supply (UPS), single-phase shunt APF using single-switch incorporating boost circuit, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) powered by fuel celland power induction heating using resonant techniques.

Power System
This academia who work into this research area mainly focuses on inter and multidisciplinary research in power system such as the assessment of transient and small signal stability; power system security, operation and planning; dynamic economic dispatch; power system reliability; transfer capability margin in power system deregulation; transfer cost allocation; load forecasting and load clustering; composite power system expansion planning; power system risk; distribution system improvement considering distributed generation and microgrid; loss minimization considering optimal reactive power dispatch, network reconfiguration and installation of compensating capacitor in distribution system; load shedding scheme in power system; lightning prediction; total ac power output prediction from a grid-photovoltaic system; optimal transformer tap changer setting; reactive power planning and FACT devices for voltage stability improvement. The above-mentioned power system research activities
are conducted by taking into account the application of neural networks, wavelet, rough set theory, probabilistic mathematical approach, numerical mathematics, fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic and biocomputation.

Power Quality
The power quality research in CEPES is specifically in the assessment of active and passive filter for harmonic mitigation; classification of transient; power quality diagnosis; identifying capacitor transients disturbances source; identifying voltage sag source location; dynamic voltage restorer for voltage sag mitigation and sensitive home appliances susceptibility to voltage sag.

High Voltage Engineering
This High voltage research area are concerning on research activities involving high voltage such as the non-contact partial discharge ultrasonic detection; three-phase single-stage high voltage dc converter and high voltage dc multiplier circuit.

Furthermore, the creation of the Research Interest Group (RIG), Power System Planning and Operation (PoSPO) and Power System Operation Computational Intelligence Research Group (POSC)to spearhead research and consultancy in areas related to power system optimization, energy management, power quality and renewable energy
